Making True Costs Visible

Our involvement in the True Cost Initiative

Due to the negative effects on soil and biodiversity, supposedly cheap, conventionally farmed fruits and vegetables are actually more costly than those that are ecologically produced. But the costs are borne by society, not the producers.

PRIMAVERA cares deeply about the well-being of the people and the earth we inhabit. Since the company was founded over 35 years ago, every decision has been made with respect to maintaining a sustainable balance between humanity and nature.

„Our dedication to the True Cost Initiative is a logical extension of our aspirations as an organic pioneer“, according to company co-founder Kurt L. Nübling.

The True Cost Initiative, in which PRIMAVERA is joined by other companies such as Hipp, Lebensbaum, GLS Bank, and the MISEREOR Relief Organization, seeks to sensitize consumers to the actual costs of agricultural products and get us all to take a closer, more critical look at our consumer behavior.

To achieve this, the initiative uses so-called True Cost Accounting, which makes the environmental impact of agriculture discernible and comparable – both its positive and negative effects. This also takes into consideration factors such as water, soil, and biodiversity, which are not included in the so-called CO2-footprint. The True Cost Initiative is committed to identifying and calculating these “hidden” costs so precisely that they can find their way into balance sheets and annual reports - thus becoming “true” costs.

The partners work together to develop, test, and implement pragmatic ac-counting standards that take into consideration nature, social, and human capital at a company and supply chain level. Additionally, the initiative intends to raise awareness through its joint communications campaign.
