Herbs of Provençe are specialties of the cultivation project Terra Provençe. Our long-time friend and partner Hans Ulrich Wentzler oversees the production of certified organic lavender, sage and premium quality infused oils including St. John’s wort and calendula.
Every year, the hills of Provençe transform into a sea of flourishing lavender, which loves the summer sun and emits a bewitching scents throughout the region. Domestic lavender is cultivated at an altitude between 800 and 1,500 meters. Organic lavender farming is a test in endurance and patience; only after three years are lavender plants capable of pushing away weeds themselves and until then, organic farmers must commit to untiring weeding and hoeing to protect the young plants since chemical herbicides are not permissible.
Domesticated lavender is harvested using special small tractors. However, machines cannot be used on the steep terrain where wild lavender grows, at an altitude above 2,600 feet, and all harvesting is done by hand.
PRIMAVERA lavender is distilled for up to ninety minutes. Only after forty-five minutes is Cumarin, an important component of lavender essential oil, released by the plant. It is important to wait long enough for Cumarin to release in the distillation process because it is active in enhancing the relaxing and harmonizing benefits that lavender is known for.
